Introduced for the 2022 model year, the Ford Maverick has generated huge demand so far, but the automaker is having a hard time producing and delivering units equipped with the standard hybrid powertrain, which is famous for achieving just under 6.5 L/100 km combined.
Consequently, Ford has decided to make the 2.0-litre EcoBoost the new standard engine for 2024, according to reports by Ford Authority and Maverick Truck Forum based on multiple U.S. sources. The turbo-four, which is rated at 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. of torque, accounts for approximately two-thirds of Maverick sales.
A dealer operating in Chateauguay, Quebec has also told The Car Guide that Canadian customers will now be able to order the EcoBoost with front-wheel drive, just like in the U.S., in addition to all-wheel drive. The hybrid powertrain, now optional, will continue to be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, however.
The backlog of hybrid Mavericks is so bad that Ford this spring was busy making units that were ordered before May 2022, the aforementioned dealer said. Production of the more efficient pickup will resume in September.
Back in March, Ford announced that production of the Maverick and Bronco Sport at the Hermosillo plant in Mexico would increase by more than 80,000 units this year to meet demand in both North America and South America.
The Maverick won’t get any other major change for 2024, incidentally. Two new body colours (Terrain and Azure Grey) will replace four existing ones, while options and packages will be slightly revised.
For example, the top-line Lariat model will automatically include the luxury package (400W converter, navigation, Bang and Olufsen audio and more). Expect pricing to increase, not just for this one but across the range. The good news is that the Tremor Off-Road package will be back.
Ford will reportedly start taking orders for the 2024 Maverick later in July, giving priority to customers who ordered a 2023 model but have yet to take delivery of their truck. A price protection plan will be offered to these customers.
